Teachers’ Roles during a Healthy Schools Day

Thanks for a great day, superb variety of activities, incredibly skilled leader, GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY. I thought you were very flexible with mixed age groups. Look forward to seeing you again. Great to have ‘follow up activities’ and that involves parents. – Sarah Bridge, Great Milton C of E Primary School, Oxford (Years R-6)

…ALL the teachers felt it was AGE APPROPRIATE and related to the curriculum as well as children’s individual lives. – Mary Nagle, Broxbourne C of E Primary School, (Years 3-6)

The running order of the day will be discussed and agreed between your coordinator and the A-life office. On the day, when your A-life coach arrives, he/she will make contact with your coordinator to ensure that everything is still as agreed and run through the specifics of the day.

A-life ask schools to have prepared the following (we will remind the coordinator to arrange this before the day):

Healthy workshops

  • Large area (preferably a school hall)
  • 12 large tables
  • Approx. 8 gym mats
  • One bench
  • Children to wear school uniform preferably (PE kit not mandatory)

Fitness sessions

-          Large area (preferably a school hall but possible outside weather permitting)

-          Children to wear PE kits / bare foot, trainers or plimpsoles

Alcohol and drugs awareness workshop

-          Class room or hall with a screen

-          Projector for use with use power point

Teacher involvement

Teachers are required to help supervise the children during all activities.

Healthy workshops

The more teachers or adults available during the healthy workshops the better, for reading and learning purposes.

  • After a short welcome to each session we ask teachers to put children into small groups (approximately 4 per group) the coach will advise.
  • It is useful to organize about 12 parents/older pupils to help with reading for nursery – yr2 workshops

Fitness sessions

During the fitness session teachers are more than welcome to jump around and join in, but we only need one or two teachers present to help with any issues.

Staff training

Similar to the fitness sessions, this requires a large area (preferably a school hall but possible outside weather permitting). Click here for more information on staff training
